About

M. Di Summa is a leading researcher in advanced manufacturing and intelligent robotics, with a focus on autonomous navigation, material handling, and composite material repair. Their most impactful contribution is the development of vision-based omnidirectional indoor robots for autonomous navigation and localization in manufacturing environments. This work, published in 2024 and already garnering 21 citations, introduces a new generation of omnidirectional automated guided vehicles (omniAGVs) that can intelligently interact with their surroundings, including people and other machinery, to transport materials within factories. Di Summa also addresses critical challenges in aerospace and automotive manufacturing through an integrated tool for semi-automatic repair of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) laminates, paired with non-destructive quality control. This work highlights the importance of CFRP’s exceptional lightness-to-resistance ratio. By bridging robotics and materials science, Di Summa’s research directly enhances factory automation, safety, and efficiency, offering practical solutions for Industry 4.0. Their work is essential reading for engineers and researchers developing next-generation manufacturing systems.
