Lingling Zhao is a leading figure in the intersection of advanced biomaterials and biofabrication, with a primary focus on developing intelligent hydrogels for tissue engineering and flexible electronics. Her pioneering work integrates 3D bioprinting with cutting-edge imaging, most notably in her highly cited 2012 study (157 citations) that combined 3-D cell printing with mesoscopic fluorescence molecular tomography to visualize vascular constructs within thick hydrogel scaffolds—a breakthrough for creating and monitoring complex, living tissues.
