About
Lifu Zhang is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of bioinspired materials, soft robotics, and forestry automation. His work is defined by translating biological principles into functional engineered systems. Zhang’s most impactful contribution is his development of photo-detachable self-cleaning surfaces inspired by gecko toepads, a breakthrough that mimics the lizard’s remarkable ability to adhere to diverse surfaces—hydrophobic or hydrophilic, smooth or rough—while maintaining strong, reversible adhesion and self-cleaning properties. This work, published in 2021, has garnered significant attention for its potential in robotics and adhesive technologies. Expanding into soft robotics, Zhang introduced a paper-like foldable shape memory wood actuator that responds to water and thermal stimuli, enabling consecutive gesture programming for soft robots—a novel, sustainable approach to actuation.
