About
Ka Chun Lau is a pioneering roboticist whose research centers on flexible surgical robotics for minimally invasive treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. His major contribution lies in developing robotic systems for Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), a technique that removes early-stage gastric and colorectal cancers without open surgery. Lau’s most cited work, “A Flexible Surgical Robotic System for Removal of Early-Stage Gastrointestinal Cancers by Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection” (2016, 64 citations), addresses the critical challenge of limited instrument controllability in flexible endoscopy by introducing a multi-degree-of-freedom robotic platform capable of precise tissue elevation and dissection. He further advanced this concept with a task-specific robot using shape memory alloy actuators and a user-specific wearable controller to enhance surgeon–robot interaction. Lau also tackled the technical hurdles of tendon-sheath actuation, including hysteresis and nonlinear friction, through motion compensation strategies.
