About
Jingzhi Tang is a pioneering researcher in the field of smart soft materials, with a primary focus on shape-morphing polymers, hydrogels, and bioinspired actuators. Their most notable contribution is the development of bilayer polymer systems that undergo three-dimensional shape transformations regulated by anisotropic dehydration-mediated hygroscopic expansion of metallohydrogels. This work, published in 2025, addresses a critical limitation in soft robotics: the inability of covalently cross-linked polymers to achieve complex Gaussian curvatures. By introducing metal-coordination bonds into hydrogel networks, Tang’s approach enables unprecedented control over curvature and shape change in response to environmental humidity, offering a new paradigm for designing adaptive materials. Although early in its citation impact, this foundational study has already garnered attention for its potential to revolutionize soft robotics, biomedical devices, and smart textiles. Tang’s innovative integration of metallosupramolecular chemistry with polymer physics positions them as a rising leader in the field, bridging fundamental materials science with practical applications in autonomous, stimuli-responsive systems.
