About
Jia Shen is a pioneering roboticist whose career spans foundational work in bipedal locomotion to cutting-edge advances in surgical robotics. His early landmark contribution, "Gait synthesis for the SD-2 biped robot to climb sloping surface" (1990, 214 citations), introduced a novel scheme enabling the SD-2 biped to detect terrain transitions using joint position sensors and heel/toe force sensors—a critical step toward adaptive, real-world walking robots. This work established Shen as a key figure in legged locomotion. More recently, Shen has focused on Concentric Tube Robots (CTRs) for minimally invasive surgery. In "Concentric Tube Robot Redundancy Resolution via Velocity/Compliance Manipulability Optimization" (2023, 7 citations), he addressed path tracking performance by optimizing manipulability—a novel perspective in CTR control. His 2024 work, "Toward Extending Concentric Tube Robot Kinematics for Large Clearance and Impulse Curvature" (2 citations), tackles the challenging scenario of tubes navigating large-clearance or high-curvature environments like aortas or industrial pipes, pushing CTRs toward unstructured, real-world deployment. Shen’s career uniquely bridges classic robotics hardware challenges with modern, application-driven surgical systems, demonstrating sustained impact across decades.
