About
J.H.G. Scholtes is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of biomedical optics and advanced telecommunications, whose work spans from micron-scale surgical interventions to next-generation network infrastructure. In biomedical engineering, Scholtes made a landmark contribution to retinal vein cannulation by developing a combined optical coherence tomography (OCT) distance sensor and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) force sensing needle. This innovation, validated in vivo in a 2018 study (41 citations), enables surgeons to precisely navigate delicate retinal veins while simultaneously measuring tissue interaction forces—a critical advancement for treating retinal vein occlusion with unprecedented safety and accuracy. Simultaneously, Scholtes has been instrumental in shaping 5G communication systems through the Eindhoven 5G Brainport Testbed (2018, 13 citations), a state-of-the-art facility designed to validate end-to-end vertical applications requiring ultra-low latency, high capacity, and robust network flexibility. This testbed serves as a proving ground for autonomous driving, cooperative robotics, and high-volume video processing. Scholtes’ dual expertise demonstrates a rare ability to bridge micro-scale medical robotics with macro-scale network infrastructure, making their work essential reading for researchers in surgical robotics, optical sensing, and 5G-enabled healthcare technologies.
