J. L. Privette is a leading figure in satellite remote sensing of land surfaces, with a career focused on the critical challenge of atmospheric correction. His foundational work on the NASA MODIS instrument, detailed in a highly cited 1997 paper (579 citations), established the operational algorithms that transform raw satellite data into accurate surface reflectances, enabling global studies of vegetation and land cover. Privette further advanced the field by developing the AERONET-based Surface Reflectance Validation Network (ASRVN), creating a benchmark dataset of spectral bidirectional reflectance and albedo from MODIS Terra and Aqua data.
