About
Chris Justice is a towering figure in Earth observation, whose work has fundamentally shaped how we monitor our planet from space. His research centers on satellite remote sensing of global land surfaces, with a particular focus on fire ecology, vegetation dynamics, and the development of operational land products. Justice led the creation of the NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land team, a monumental effort that produced the first global, systematic datasets for studying land cover change and biomass burning. His foundational 1997 paper on atmospheric correction for MODIS data, cited over 579 times, laid the critical groundwork for deriving accurate surface reflectance from space. This work culminated in his highly influential 2016 study on the Landsat 8 surface reflectance product, which has amassed over 1,643 citations and is now a standard for global land monitoring. As a former Chair of the Global Observation of Forest Cover and Land Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD) program, Justice’s impact is immense, providing the scientific community with the tools and data necessary to understand our changing Earth.
