About
Ivan P. Parkin is a leading figure in materials chemistry, whose research spans the synthesis of advanced nanomaterials, energy storage systems, and smart soft robotics. He is perhaps best known for pioneering the High-Throughput Continuous Hydrothermal (HiTCH) flow synthesis reactor, which enabled the rapid creation of an entire nanoceramic phase diagram—a 66-sample library of Ce(x)Zr(y)Y(z)O(2-delta) in under 12 hours. This landmark work, cited over 70 times, revolutionized the combinatorial discovery of functional oxides. More recently, Parkin has driven innovation in on-chip energy storage, developing 3D porous metal-scaffold interdigitated micro-electrodes for high-performance zinc-ion micro-batteries and planar systems that promise to power medical implants, micro-robots, and IoT devices. His work on low-field actuating magnetic elastomer membranes, characterized using fibre-optic interferometry, opens new avenues for wireless biomedical sensing and cargo delivery. With a career spanning hundreds of publications and thousands of citations, Parkin’s contributions are foundational to the design of next-generation micro-scale energy systems and responsive materials.
