Ian F. Akyildiz is a pioneering figure in wireless communications, renowned for his foundational contributions to underwater networking and the Internet of Things. His research spans underwater wireless communications, software-defined networking, and novel sensing technologies. Akyildiz’s seminal work, “Overview of networking protocols for underwater wireless communications” (2009), with over 424 citations, established the theoretical and practical framework for enabling scientific, environmental, and military applications through reliable signal transmission in aquatic environments. He introduced SoftWater (2016), a software-defined networking paradigm that revolutionized next-generation underwater communication systems by enhancing flexibility and efficiency.
