About

Huib Ovaa is a pioneering chemical biologist whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of ubiquitin and ubiquitin-like (UBL) signaling pathways. His key research areas include chemical biology, protein chemistry, and the development of tools to study the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Ovaa's most significant contribution is the development of a general chemical ligation approach for generating isopeptide-linked ubiquitin and UBL conjugates. This breakthrough, described in his highly cited 2011 paper (102 citations), enabled the creation of fluorescence polarization assay reagents to monitor the activity of ubiquitin(-like) proteases, providing researchers with powerful tools to study these critical enzymes. His work has had substantial impact, with his papers collectively garnering thousands of citations. Ovaa has also contributed to cancer research, co-authoring a 2017 study identifying a novel ATM inhibitor with cancer cell-specific radiosensitization activity. As a group leader at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and later at Leiden University Medical Center, Ovaa has trained numerous scientists and continues to push the boundaries of chemical biology, developing innovative approaches to probe and manipulate protein function in health and disease.
