About

Huaici Zhao’s research lies at the intersection of medical robotics, computer vision, and autonomous navigation, with a focus on developing intelligent systems for healthcare and complex environments. A key contribution is the advancement of automatic endoscope video analysis, where Zhao introduced a framework for automatic gastroscopy video quality assessment—a critical function for medical robots and computer-aided diagnosis systems that must contend with low-quality, uncontrolled imaging conditions. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Zhao pioneered work on a throat swab sampling robot, developing an improved U-Net model for M-region segmentation to enable safe, automated specimen collection and reduce cross-infection risks for medical personnel. More recently, Zhao proposed the AMP-RRT* algorithm, an adaptive multi-layer path planning method that enhances robot navigation in complex environments by integrating dynamic obstacle avoidance. While citation counts are still growing, Zhao’s work demonstrates a clear trajectory of impact in medical robotics and autonomous systems, addressing real-world challenges from clinical diagnostics to pandemic response.
