About
Hansheng Liao is a rising leader in soft robotics and intelligent materials, whose work bridges the gap between adaptive machines and biomedical applications. His primary research focuses on developing bio-inspired electronic skins (E-skins) and self-sensing hydrogel systems for next-generation soft robots. In a landmark 2024 study, Liao introduced a machine learning-assisted E-skin capable of simultaneously recognizing thermal stimuli and mechanical deformation—a critical step toward enabling soft robots to perceive complex environments. This work, garnering 28 citations, demonstrates his ability to integrate artificial intelligence with flexible sensor arrays. More recently, his 2025 paper on a multilayer self-sensing hydrogel soft robot fabricated via stereolithography achieved 18 citations, showcasing a novel approach for on-demand drug delivery. By combining 3D printing with responsive hydrogels, Liao’s robot can autonomously sense and release therapeutics, opening new avenues for targeted medicine. His contributions are not only advancing fundamental understanding of soft matter but also paving the way for practical applications in healthcare and human-machine interaction.
