About
Haixin Yu is pioneering the frontier of robotic perception by fusing vision and touch to solve some of the most intractable challenges in autonomous manipulation. Their core research centers on visuotactile sensing, soft gripper design, and multimodal perception for complex environments. Yu’s most influential contribution is a visual–tactile fusion framework for transparent object grasping in complex backgrounds (2023, 64 citations), which synergizes the complementary strengths of cameras and tactile sensors to dramatically improve grasping efficiency where vision alone fails. Building on this, Yu developed M³Tac (2024), a groundbreaking multispectral multimodal visuotactile sensor that achieves beyond-human sensory capabilities by integrating multiple spectral bands into a single tactile interface. For extreme low-visibility conditions, Yu created JamTac (2023, 12 citations), a novel jamming-based soft gripper that combines high-resolution tactile perception with integrated sensing-grasping, enabling robots to search and grasp effectively in complete darkness. Through these innovations, Yu is systematically equipping robots with the rich, redundant sensory feedback needed to handle transparent, reflective, and occluded objects—pushing the boundaries of what autonomous systems can perceive and manipulate in unstructured, real-world settings.
