About

Guofang Gong is a leading figure in the development of intelligent robotic systems for medical and industrial applications, with a particular focus on wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) and hybrid robotics. His most cited work, a 2024 review on robotic WCE (129 citations), establishes him as a key voice in non-invasive gastrointestinal diagnostics, highlighting advances that eliminate sedation risks and enable small-intestine evaluation. Gong has pushed beyond passive imaging into active therapeutic capsules, exemplified by a 2025 paper on a dual-functional capsule robot for drug delivery and tissue biopsy, which uses magnetic torsion spring technology to overcome spatial and energy constraints. In parallel, he has made significant contributions to industrial robotics: his 2018 paper on a continuous friction feedforward sliding mode controller for the TriMule hybrid robot (68 citations) addresses the challenge of nonlinear, strongly coupled dynamics to improve trajectory-tracking performance. More recently, Gong has explored the frontier of autonomous construction, proposing a paradigm shift from tunnel boring machines to tunnel boring robots in a 2024 work. His research also spans magnetic elastomer fabrication and hydraulic exoskeleton simulation, demonstrating a versatile engineering approach that bridges medical devices, manufacturing, and heavy machinery.
