Dr. Gaofeng Chen is pioneering the development of advanced soft materials at the intersection of bio-inspired design and liquid metal engineering. His research focuses on two transformative areas: mechanically tunable hydrogels for wearable sensing and the precise manipulation of liquid metal droplets for soft robotics. In his most impactful work, Chen engineered an all-wood hydrogel that achieves exceptional flexibility and broad-range mechanical tunability by exploiting the Hofmeister effect to create nanoscale channels. This material, detailed in a 2022 study with 100 citations, overcomes the inherent rigidity of natural cellulose, enabling highly sensitive human motion monitoring. More recently, he introduced a novel "hurricane-in-a-tube" electrocapillarity technique that allows for the high-throughput generation and patterning of liquid metal droplets—a breakthrough that addresses the longstanding challenge of handling high-surface-tension fluids.
