Eleni Siampli is pioneering the next generation of minimally invasive neurosurgery, with a focused mission to transform the treatment of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH)—the deadliest stroke subtype, which carries a one-month mortality rate as high as 52%. Her research lies at the critical intersection of medical robotics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) guidance, and biocompatible materials. Siampli’s major contribution is the development of the ASPIHRE platform (A Surgical Platform for Intracerebral Hemorrhage Robotic Evacuation), a non-metallic, MR-guided concentric tube robot designed to overcome the limitations of traditional craniotomy. Her seminal 2023 paper on this robot, which has already garnered 25 citations, demonstrates a paradigm shift from invasive surgery and “watchful waiting” toward precise, image-guided evacuation. By engineering robots that are fully MR-conditional, Siampli enables real-time visualization during clot removal, minimizing cortical disruption and improving patient outcomes.
