About

Duncan Campbell is a pioneering roboticist whose work has fundamentally advanced legged locomotion, particularly through his contributions to the development of the simple hexapod robot, RHex. His research centers on bio-inspired robotics, mechanical design, and open-loop control strategies for traversing complex, unstructured terrain. Campbell’s most significant achievement is demonstrating that a robot with only six actuated degrees of freedom and compliant legs could reliably perform tasks previously thought to require far more complex sensing and computation. His 2003 paper on stair climbing, which has garnered 189 citations, introduced an open-loop controller enabling RHex to ascend fractured and unstable surfaces, including flights of stairs. He followed this with a 2004 study (71 citations) that achieved the first reliable stair descent for a small hexapod, using only two trajectory sets based on stair slope.
