About
Douglas Pargett is a leading figure in autonomous marine microbial ecology, pioneering the integration of robotic platforms with molecular sensing to transform how we study ocean microbes. His research centers on harmful algal blooms (HABs), fecal indicator bacteria, and the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM)—a critical, yet elusive, layer of the open ocean. Pargett’s major contributions include developing and field-testing autonomous molecular analyzers embedded within ocean observatories, enabling real-time, in-situ quantification of HAB species and toxins in dynamic coastal waters like Monterey Bay.
