About
Dominic Doyle is a leading figure in high-energy astrophysics instrumentation, whose work centers on the precision alignment and integration of advanced X-ray optics. His primary research area involves the development of Silicon Pore Optics (SPO) for next-generation space telescopes, most notably for the European Space Agency’s ATHENA (Advanced Telescope for High-ENergy Astrophysics) mission. Doyle’s major contribution is the pioneering of a facility and process—developed in collaboration with Media Lario—for the alignment, assembly, and integration of hundreds of SPO mirror modules onto ATHENA’s Mirror Assembly Module. This work, detailed in his highly cited 2021 paper (8 citations), is critical to achieving the telescope’s unprecedented imaging performance. By exploiting a full-size optical bench to capture and co-align the modules, Doyle has solved a key engineering challenge for one of ESA’s most ambitious missions. His efforts directly enable ATHENA’s goal of mapping hot gas structures and black holes, cementing his role as a key enabler of future X-ray astronomy.
