About
Chris Young is a pioneering roboticist and deep-sea engineer whose work has fundamentally expanded humanity’s reach into the ocean’s most extreme environments. His primary research centers on the design, development, and field deployment of hybrid underwater robotic vehicles capable of operating at hadal depths—the deepest, least-explored regions of the ocean. Young’s most significant contribution is the creation of the Nereus hybrid underwater robotic vehicle (HROV), a revolutionary platform that can function both as a free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and as a tethered remotely operated vehicle (ROV). This dual-mode capability allowed scientists to conduct both wide-area surveys and precise sampling at depths exceeding 11,000 meters. His landmark 2008 paper on Nereus’s design and initial sea trials has garnered over 100 citations, while his 2009 field report detailing the vehicle’s historic dive to 10,903 meters in the Challenger Deep—the deepest point on Earth—remains a foundational reference in hadal engineering. Young’s work has enabled groundbreaking geological, biological, and chemical studies of the hadal zone, directly contributing to the discovery of new microbial life and tectonic processes.
