About

Chenghui Qian is a leading researcher in bionic sensing and intelligent tactile systems, with a focus on bioinspired sensor design and machine learning–driven perception. Their most notable contribution is the development of a bionic piezoelectric tactile sensor, inspired by the tactile mechanisms of human fingertips. Fabricated from polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric film, this sensor can simultaneously identify multiple surface properties—including softness, viscoelasticity, thermal conductivity, and texture roughness—by integrating machine learning algorithms for feature recognition. This work, published in 2021 and garnering 19 citations, represents a significant advance in artificial tactile perception, bridging materials science, biomechanics, and artificial intelligence. Qian’s research has important implications for robotics, prosthetics, and human–machine interfaces, enabling more nuanced and adaptive interactions with the environment. By mimicking the complexity of human touch, their sensor technology offers a pathway toward more dexterous and perceptive robotic systems. Qian’s innovative approach to combining piezoelectric materials with data-driven classification methods marks them as a rising figure in the field of intelligent sensing.
