About
Cason Male is a pioneer in aerial robotics and autonomous construction, best known for demonstrating that flying machines can build physical structures at architectural scale. His landmark work, "The Flight Assembled Architecture installation: Cooperative construction with flying machines" (2014, 303 citations), introduced the world to the first structure assembled entirely by quadrocopters—a 6-meter-tall tower of 1,500 foam modules built over 18 hours during a four-day live exhibition. This installation proved that swarms of autonomous aerial vehicles could cooperate in real time to erect complex, load-bearing forms, laying the foundation for a new field of distributed aerial manufacturing. Male’s research bridges robotics, control theory, and architecture, addressing core challenges in multi-agent coordination, precision landing, and adaptive assembly. His contributions have inspired subsequent work in on-site construction, disaster relief, and space habitat assembly. By merging engineering rigor with artistic vision, Male has shown that the future of building may not require cranes or scaffolding—just a fleet of flying robots working in concert.
