About
Fabio Gramazio is a pioneering architect and researcher whose work sits at the dynamic intersection of digital fabrication, robotics, and architectural design. Based at ETH Zurich, he has fundamentally reshaped how buildings are conceived and constructed, championing the integration of robotic systems into architectural practice across scales from prefabrication to in-situ construction. Gramazio's most celebrated contributions include the landmark *Flight Assembled Architecture* installation (2014, 303 citations), in which autonomous quadrocopters collaboratively assembled a 6-meter tower from 1,500 foam modules — one of the first structures ever built by flying vehicles. This work catalyzed an entirely new subfield, aerial robotic construction, further formalized in his foundational 2012 paper (142 citations). His research extends robustly into timber construction, with studies on robotic prefabrication and reinforcement learning-based joint assembly (197 and 127 citations respectively), as well as innovative concrete fabrication methods such as Eggshell ultra-thin 3D-printed formwork (116 citations) and Smart Dynamic Casting systems. Collectively accumulating over 1,400 citations across his top works alone, Gramazio's research has profoundly influenced how architects, engineers, and roboticists collaborate, establishing computational fabrication as an indispensable dimension of contemporary architectural research.
