About
Carole Fakhry is a leading head and neck surgeon and researcher whose work has fundamentally reshaped the understanding and management of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related oropharyngeal cancer. Her research focuses on the intersection of virology, surgical innovation, and cancer outcomes, particularly in HPV-positive squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Fakhry’s landmark 2016 study (119 citations) demonstrated that HPV detection in unknown primary head and neck cancers directs the search for the primary tumor to the oropharynx, changing diagnostic protocols.
