About
David W. Eisele is a leading head and neck surgeon whose work has reshaped the management of oropharyngeal cancer and unknown primary tumors. His research centers on transoral robotic surgery (TORS), human papillomavirus (HPV)-related disease, and cost-effective treatment paradigms. Eisele’s landmark 2013 case series and systematic review on TORS for parapharyngeal space neoplasms (122 citations) established a minimally invasive alternative to traditional open approaches, reducing morbidity. He further demonstrated the paradigm shift in oropharyngeal cancer surgery, showing that TORS offers comparable oncologic outcomes with lower costs and improved functional recovery (48 citations). In the era of HPV, Eisele’s 2016 study on unknown primary squamous cell carcinoma (119 citations) revealed that HPV status directs primary tumor localization to the oropharynx, fundamentally changing diagnostic algorithms. His 2018 stepwise approach to primary tumor detection (46 citations) showed that systematic lingual tonsillectomy significantly increases identification rates, guiding targeted, less toxic therapy. As a former chair of otolaryngology at Johns Hopkins, Eisele’s contributions have advanced precision surgery, reduced treatment burden, and set new standards for evidence-based, value-driven care in head and neck oncology.
