About
Boris Regaard is a specialist in laser welding technology, with research focused on precision beam positioning, seam-tracking, and automated welding systems. His work addresses one of the central challenges in high-performance laser welding: maintaining micrometer-level accuracy of beam placement along complex weld trajectories, a requirement critical to achieving consistent, high-quality results in industrial applications. His most influential contribution, "Seam-tracking for high precision laser welding applications" (2009), has garnered 36 citations and provides a comprehensive analysis of seam-tracking methods, their inherent limitations, and enhanced conceptual frameworks for overcoming them. This paper has become a key reference for researchers and engineers working at the intersection of laser optics and manufacturing automation. Complementing this work, Regaard also pioneered the concept of "self-guided" laser welding — a system enabling the welding head itself to autonomously follow joint geometries with accuracies finer than 20–150 micrometers, depending on beam focus conditions. These contributions collectively advance the feasibility of fully automated, high-precision laser welding in demanding production environments, offering meaningful improvements in quality, productivity, and process reliability for industries where tolerances leave virtually no margin for error.
