About

Aref Ghorbani is a rising leader in the field of mechanical metamaterials, whose work is redefining how we control deformation and instability in advanced structures. His research focuses on the intersection of geometry, topology, and elasticity, with key contributions to auxetic materials, non-Euclidean plates, and programmable mechanical effects. In his highly cited 2021 work on thick meta-plates (50 citations), Ghorbani demonstrated how simple deflection can induce curvature in hexagonal cellular structures, offering a new pathway to design intrinsically curved functional devices without complex fabrication. He has also made groundbreaking strides in suppressing torsional buckling—a critical failure mode in thin shells—by leveraging auxeticity and orthotropy, as shown in his 2024 study (30 citations). This work has direct implications for biomedical applications, such as preventing artery collapse. Additionally, Ghorbani has pioneered the inversion and programmability of the Poynting effect in metamaterials, a phenomenon typically considered a fixed material property. By enabling tunable coupling between shear and normal deformation, he has opened new doors for soft robotics and adaptive structures. With a growing citation record and a portfolio of inventive, application-driven research, Ghorbani is a compelling voice in the next generation of mechanical design.
