Andrew Vaughan is a pioneering figure in autonomous space navigation and spacecraft operations, whose work has directly shaped NASA’s approach to deep-space exploration. His primary research areas include optical navigation, autonomous sequencing, and entry, descent, and landing (EDL) systems for planetary missions. Vaughan’s most influential contribution is his leadership in developing the Virtual Machine Language (VML)—an award-winning, advanced procedural sequencing language that has been the backbone of NASA deep-space missions since 1997. VML’s state-oriented architecture was critical to the successful EDL of the Phoenix spacecraft on Mars, a landmark achievement that demonstrated the power of reactive sequencing in real-time, high-stakes environments.
