About
A plan, in the context of robotics and artificial intelligence, is a structured sequence of actions or decisions that guides an agent toward achieving a specified goal within a given environment. Derived from classical AI planning theory, a robot's plan encodes the logical ordering of tasks, conditional responses to environmental states, and strategies for handling uncertainty or failure. Plans may be generated offline from complete world models or constructed dynamically as the robot perceives and responds to changing conditions. They range from simple linear action sequences to hierarchical, reactive, or probabilistic frameworks capable of handling partial information, multiple agents, and unpredictable real-world events. In robotics, planning is fundamental to motion control, manipulation, task execution, autonomous navigation, and human-robot collaboration. Advances in sampling-based methods, learning from demonstration, and large language models have significantly expanded the sophistication of plan generation and execution. Planning matters because it transforms high-level goals into executable, coordinated behavior, enabling robots to operate safely, efficiently, and adaptively in complex real-world settings without requiring constant human intervention.
