About

A. Phillips is a leading figure in observational gamma-ray burst (GRB) astrophysics, specializing in the robotic, rapid-response optical follow-up of these cataclysmic events. Their major contributions center on using the ROTSE-III telescope network to capture the earliest moments of GRB afterglows, providing critical data on the transition from the prompt gamma-ray emission to the optical phase. This work includes the discovery of GRB 020405 and its late red bump, and the detection of GRB 060927 at a redshift of z=5.47, which demonstrated the potential of GRBs as probes of the early universe and the end of the Dark Ages. Phillips also led the first comprehensive set of early optical afterglows from ROTSE-III and Swift, a study that has garnered over 110 citations. With a portfolio of highly cited papers, including work on broadband GRB behavior and untriggered afterglow searches, their research has been instrumental in shaping our understanding of the physics of relativistic jets and the use of GRBs as cosmological tools.
