A. Phillips is a leading figure in observational gamma-ray burst (GRB) astrophysics, specializing in the robotic, rapid-response optical follow-up of these cataclysmic events. Their major contributions center on using the ROTSE-III telescope network to capture the earliest moments of GRB afterglows, providing critical data on the transition from the prompt gamma-ray emission to the optical phase. This work includes the discovery of GRB 020405 and its late red bump, and the detection of GRB 060927 at a redshift of z=5.47, which demonstrated the potential of GRBs as probes of the early universe and the end of the Dark Ages.
