W. Rujopakarn is a leading figure in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), specializing in the earliest moments of these cataclysmic cosmic explosions. Their research focuses on the prompt optical emission and early afterglows of GRBs, using the robotic ROTSE-III telescope network to capture light from just seconds after the burst. A key contribution was the detection of GRB 060927 at a redshift of z=5.47, providing the earliest rest-frame optical detection of any GRB and demonstrating their power as probes of the early universe, near the end of the Dark Ages. Their work on the "Looking into the Fireball" paper (110 citations) provided a comprehensive dataset of early afterglows, while their studies of GRB 051109A and GRB 051111 (63 citations) explored broadband behavior during the gamma-ray emission phase itself. Rujopakarn also helped establish the ROTSE-III network's capabilities and derived the optical luminosity function of GRBs from a uniform sample of 58 bursts.
