A centrifugal compressor is a rotating mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by converting kinetic energy into pressure energy through a spinning impeller. As the impeller rotates at high speed, it flings gas radially outward, accelerating it and then diffusing that flow to raise static pressure. In robotics and AI systems, centrifugal compressors and their closely related centrifugal impeller variants serve several important functions: they provide suction forces that enable wall-climbing robots to adhere to vertical and inverted surfaces, and in miniaturized form they support active cooling, pneumatic actuation, and life-support subsystems in compact platforms such as medical devices and nanosatellites. Their appeal lies in delivering relatively high flow rates and pressure ratios within a compact, lightweight form factor compared to positive-displacement alternatives. For robotics engineers, understanding centrifugal compressor design — including impeller geometry, rotational speed, and stall characteristics — is essential for optimizing adhesion performance, thermal management, and system efficiency across applications ranging from inspection robots to space-constrained autonomous platforms.
