About
Zi Gu is a pioneer at the intersection of DNA nanotechnology, soft robotics, and biomedical engineering. Her most celebrated contribution is the development of the world’s first super-soft and super-elastic DNA hydrogel-based robot, capable of magnetically driven navigational locomotion for targeted cell delivery in confined, narrow spaces—a breakthrough inspired by organisms like earthworms. This work, which has garnered over 170 citations, promises to revolutionize minimally invasive surgery and in vivo cellular manipulation. Gu has also advanced the field of micro/nanomotors, creating biocatalytic self-propelled metal-organic framework microparticles with pH-triggered buoyancy control for directional vertical motion, a key innovation for targeted drug delivery and environmental remediation. Her research uniquely combines the programmability of DNA with the mechanical properties of hydrogels and the propulsion of catalytic systems, establishing a new paradigm for intelligent, responsive materials. With her work appearing in top-tier journals and accumulating hundreds of citations, Gu is recognized as a leading voice in DNA robotics and smart microsystems, inspiring a new generation of researchers to build life-like, functional nanomachines.
