About
Yasuhiro Miyata is a robotics researcher whose work focuses on human-robot interaction and the control of underactuated, dynamically stable mobile robots. His research centers on two key areas: developing robots that can intuitively communicate their intentions to nearby humans, and solving the complex control challenges posed by two-wheeled robots with manipulator arms. In his early influential work, Miyata introduced the PMR-5 mobile robot, which uses a projector to display a 2D frame on the ground, providing a preliminary announcement of the robot’s forthcoming motion—a novel approach to improving safety and trust in shared workspaces. More recently, Miyata has made significant contributions to the stabilization and control of two-wheeled robots (TWRs) equipped with arms, a class of robots ideal for collaborative tasks due to their human-like, small footprint. His major contribution is a model-based pitch angle compensation method that accounts for center of gravity (CoG) shifts caused by arm movements and load transport. By accurately estimating and compensating for these CoG variations, his research, including a 2025 paper, demonstrably improves translational control performance, bringing these agile robots closer to practical deployment in aging societies.
