About
W. R. Sessions is a leading figure in atmospheric and climate sciences, specializing in aerosol data assimilation, multi-model ensemble forecasting, and the characterization of aerosol emissions in complex tropical environments. Their most impactful contribution is the development of the first 11-year global gridded aerosol optical thickness reanalysis (v1.0), a fused satellite-model product widely cited (237 citations) for its utility in climate and air quality research. Sessions also played a pivotal role in establishing the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction Multi-Model Ensemble (ICAP-MME), a foundational operational consensus tool that integrates global aerosol models to improve forecast reliability (132 citations). This work bridges the gap between research and operational numerical weather prediction. Additionally, Sessions led intensive field studies in the Maritime Continent, such as the 2012 7SEAS southwest monsoon campaign, combining AERONET, lidar, and surface observations to untangle the complex interplay between biomass burning emissions and regional meteorology. Their research directly supports operational aerosol forecasting centers worldwide, providing essential tools for understanding aerosol impacts on weather, climate, and human health.
