About
Dr. J.-J. Morcrette is a leading figure in aerosol and dust forecasting, whose work has been instrumental in advancing global operational aerosol prediction. His primary research focuses on the development and evaluation of multi-model ensemble systems for aerosol forecasting, with a particular emphasis on mineral dust transport. Dr. Morcrette’s major contribution is his foundational role in the International Cooperative for Aerosol Prediction (ICAP) Multi-Model Ensemble (MME). His landmark 2015 paper, cited over 130 times, established the basic climatological characteristics of this ensemble, paving the way for a global operational aerosol consensus. This work is critical for improving air quality and climate models. He has also been central to major model intercomparison studies, notably forecasting the intense Saharan dust outbreak that impacted Europe in April 2011, a project conducted under the World Meteorological Organisation’s Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System.
