About
Ulrich Raschke is a pioneer in mobile robotics, best known for his foundational work on sensor-based mapping and integrated robot navigation. His research centers on enabling autonomous robots to perceive, map, and move through complex environments by fusing obstacle avoidance, global path planning, and vision sensing into cohesive systems. Raschke’s most influential contribution is the introduction of an Index of Performance (IOP) for quantitatively comparing grid-type map-building techniques, a method that provides a single, objective metric for evaluating how accurately a robot’s sensor-built map matches a reference map. This work, which has garnered 30 citations, remains a key reference for researchers in robotic perception and mapping. Raschke also led the Carmel project at the University of Michigan, which won the prestigious AAAI 1992 Robot Competition.
