About
Stephano S. Mello is a molecular biologist whose work has advanced our understanding of the genetic and metabolic underpinnings of type 1 diabetes (T1D). His research focuses on the gene expression profiles of lymphomononuclear cells in recently diagnosed patients, aiming to unravel the complex interplay between genetic susceptibility and disease onset. In his highly cited 2008 study (16 citations), Mello stratified gene expression according to T1D susceptibility regions, with a particular emphasis on the MHC region on chromosome 6p21, as well as key loci including PTPN22, CTLA-4, and the insulin gene. His earlier 2006 work (9 citations) was pioneering in its use of large-scale cDNA microarray technology to compare lymphomononuclear cells from newly diagnosed patients against matched healthy controls. This study revealed that metabolism genes are among the most differentially expressed, suggesting that metabolic dysregulation is an early and integral feature of the autoimmune process. By bridging genetics and functional genomics, Mello’s contributions provide a foundation for identifying novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in T1D.
