About
Paula Sandrin-Garcia’s research lies at the intersection of immunogenetics and complex disease, with a primary focus on unraveling the genetic and transcriptional underpinnings of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D). Her work has been instrumental in moving beyond simple genetic association studies to explore how known susceptibility loci—particularly within the MHC region, as well as PTPN22, CTLA-4, and insulin—actually function at the level of gene expression. In her highly cited 2008 study (16 citations), she demonstrated that gene expression profiles in T1D patients could be stratified according to these established susceptibility regions, providing a functional layer to genomic risk. Earlier, in a 2006 study (9 citations), she pioneered the use of large-scale cDNA microarray technology to profile lymphomononuclear cells from recently diagnosed patients, identifying metabolism genes among the differentially expressed transcripts. This work was notable for its early application of transcriptomics to autoimmune disease, offering novel insight into the metabolic dysregulation that accompanies immune activation in T1D.
