About
Maria Cristina Foss‐Freitas is a leading researcher in the immunogenetics and metabolic underpinnings of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Her work has been instrumental in unraveling how genetic susceptibility regions—particularly the MHC locus on chromosome 6p21, along with PTPN22, CTLA-4, and insulin gene regions—drive disease onset. By employing large-scale gene expression profiling, she demonstrated that metabolism-related genes are among the most differentially expressed in lymphomononuclear cells from newly diagnosed T1D patients, a finding that bridges the gap between immune dysregulation and metabolic dysfunction.
