About

Shiyu Zhu is a rising force in computational materials science, with a focused expertise in two-dimensional (2D) materials, particularly MXenes, and their applications in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). Their research is centered on discovering and characterizing novel 2D materials with exceptional piezoelectric and ferroelastic properties, which are critical for next-generation sensors, actuators, and energy harvesters. Zhu’s most cited work, a 2022 study on VIA group functionalized MXenes, demonstrated large out-of-plane piezoelectricity, a key breakthrough for integrating these materials into MEMS thin films. This paper has garnered 20 citations, highlighting its immediate impact. Complementing this, their investigation into ferroelastic Zr2P2XY monolayers revealed tunable in-plane electronic anisotropy alongside remarkable out-of-plane piezoelectricity, while their theoretical work on Sc2C-based MXenes provided a foundational blueprint for NEMS applications. Collectively, these contributions have earned over 50 citations in just a few years, establishing Zhu as a leading voice in the computational design of functional 2D materials. Their work not only advances fundamental understanding but also paves the way for practical, high-performance devices in the MEMS industry.
