About

S. Curiel is an observational astronomer whose research centers on the characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres and the refinement of transit photometry techniques. In a landmark 2015 study, Curiel pioneered the use of three optical telescopes at the San Pedro Mártir National Observatory to conduct multi-filter defocused photometry of the hot Jupiters WASP-39b and WASP-43b. This work, which has garnered 35 citations, was particularly notable for obtaining the first-ever U-band transit observations of WASP-39b, providing critical data on high-altitude atmospheric scattering and cloud properties. By demonstrating the viability of smaller, ground-based telescopes for exoplanet atmospheric studies, Curiel’s methodology has enabled broader participation in the field and has informed subsequent space-based observations, including those by the James Webb Space Telescope. Curiel’s contributions have helped establish robust protocols for multi-wavelength photometry, advancing our understanding of planetary composition and thermal structures beyond the Solar System.
