About

S. Navarro-Meza is an observational astronomer whose research spans two compelling frontiers of modern planetary science: the characterization of extrasolar planets and the photometric taxonomy of near-Earth objects (NEOs). Working primarily from the San Pedro Mártir National Observatory in Mexico, Navarro-Meza has made effective use of robotic and multi-telescope facilities to advance our understanding of bodies both within and beyond our solar system. Their most recognized contribution, garnering 35 citations, involved pioneering multifilter defocused photometry of the transiting hot Jupiters WASP-39b and WASP-43b, including the first-ever observation of WASP-39b in the U filter using the observatory's 2.12m telescope. This work demonstrated the powerful potential of coordinated multi-telescope campaigns for exoplanet characterization. Navarro-Meza subsequently turned their attention to NEOs, employing the RATIR instrument's rapid-response capabilities to build one of the most extensive multiwavelength photometric datasets of sub-kilometer near-Earth objects, ultimately cataloguing color and taxonomic data for over 300 NEOs across multiple studies. This ongoing campaign contributes meaningfully to planetary defense efforts and our broader understanding of small body composition and population diversity in the inner solar system.
