About
M. Reyes-Ruiz is a versatile observational astronomer whose research spans two compelling frontiers: the characterization of transiting exoplanets and the physical taxonomy of near-Earth objects (NEOs). Working primarily from the San Pedro Mártir National Observatory in Mexico, Reyes-Ruiz has made notable contributions to the tools and techniques of modern planetary and exoplanetary science. Among their most recognized work is a 2015 study employing three telescopes simultaneously to obtain multifilter, defocused photometry of the hot Jupiters WASP-39b and WASP-43b — a methodological achievement that demonstrated the observatory's capacity for coordinated exoplanet transit science and garnered 35 citations. Shifting focus to our own solar neighborhood, Reyes-Ruiz has led extensive observational campaigns using the robotic RATIR instrument, producing color classifications for hundreds of NEOs. The 2019 rapid-response survey of 82 NEOs and a 2024 taxonomic study of 238 objects reflect a sustained commitment to planetary defense-relevant science. Through multiwavelength photometry and multi-telescope coordination, Reyes-Ruiz has helped establish San Pedro Mártir as a meaningful contributor to both exoplanet and solar system research, offering students a model of broad, instrumentation-driven astronomical inquiry.
