About
Dr. Ryuta Seguchi is a pioneering Japanese cardiac surgeon at the forefront of minimally invasive robotic heart surgery. His research focuses on advancing totally endoscopic robotic techniques for complex valvular diseases, particularly mitral valve repair. Dr. Seguchi’s major contributions include demonstrating the safety and efficacy of robotic mitral valve repair in Japan, with his landmark 2019 study (26 citations) reporting the first major clinical outcomes following the national insurance coverage of robotic cardiac surgery. He has developed innovative combined procedures, such as robot-assisted mitral valve plasty with the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum, and has refined surgical techniques for challenging pathologies like Barlow’s disease—his 2023 study on robotic keyhole surgery for Barlow valves (5 citations) showcases excellent outcomes in 124 patients. Dr. Seguchi has also advanced perioperative safety with novel de-airing methods and bilateral endoscopic approaches for left atrial appendectomy. With a growing body of work spanning over 1,200 mitral valve repairs and nearly 800 robotic cases, his contributions are establishing new standards for minimally invasive cardiac surgery in Japan and beyond.
