About
R. Thicksten is a key figure in astronomical instrumentation and robotic telescope operations, best known for spearheading the conversion of the Palomar 60-inch telescope (P60) into a fully automated facility. This landmark project, detailed in the highly cited 2006 paper "The Automated Palomar 60 Inch Telescope" (245 citations), transformed a classical, night assistant-operated observatory into a self-sustaining robotic system capable of rapid, sustained observations. Since becoming operational in September 2004, the automated P60 has enabled moderately fast (under three minutes) and deep (R magnitude ~23) transient follow-up, revolutionizing how the astronomical community responds to time-critical events such as gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. Thicksten's engineering and systems integration work directly enabled high-impact science by providing a reliable, low-latency platform for robotic sky surveys. This contribution remains a model for modernizing legacy telescopes, demonstrating how automation can extend the scientific lifespan of classic instruments while dramatically increasing observational efficiency and accessibility for the broader research community.
