About

R. Behrend is a prominent figure in time-domain astrophysics and planetary science, best known for pioneering the continuous optical monitoring of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) during their prompt emission. In their landmark 2006 study, Behrend led the first-ever continuous optical observation of a GRB (GRB 060111B) with second-scale temporal resolution using the TAROT robotic observatory, achieving 53 citations and fundamentally advancing our understanding of the early, high-energy phase of these cosmic explosions. This work demonstrated the feasibility of robotic telescopes for capturing rapid transient phenomena, establishing a new observational paradigm. Beyond GRBs, Behrend has made significant contributions to asteroid science, developing shape models of asteroids from lightcurve observations using the BlueEye600 robotic observatory (2017, 19 citations).
